The city of New Delhi in the north or Madras in the east or Bombay in the west or Thiruvananthapuram in the south where the beaches of the state of Kerala ribbon along to the end of a vast land and all the subcontinent is above and you wander into a village outside of Thiruvananthapuram and find a train station built two centuries ago in the dust and heat a single track on timbers of wooden sleepers that lead out under the slumber-filled skies families crouching on the platform selling bananas or nuts or chai for 2 rupees a throw and out in the grass the sun spiralling orange the air a heat that can send to sleep for millennia as in comes the locomotive that takes you 4,545K the ticket says from the Laccadive Sea to McLeod Gang in the toes of the Himalayas (Sanskrit: abode of snow).
