you go in the bar

and the barkeep sees you and smiles

and you ask about playing tunes, possibly please, on the bar’s ace soundsystem

after the launch of your 2nd novel

and the barkeep’s eyes shine at the mention of ‘novel’ and the barkeep

tells you the joint’s owner is not about - the dude just got back from dubai - and the barkeep tells you, too, ‘he’s very open about music though perhaps not heavy techno’

and you say, ‘it’s balearia, it’s acid house, disco’

and those eyes shine more and you say, ‘thank you for your kindness’ and the eyes are now emeralds

and you say goodbye and the barkeep does the same

and this is all it takes for a human to feel good - a smile, a warmth all round

and you do come away feeling good
