4. Short Story
Let’s Do A Robbery
What a day for sun.
What a day to be upcountry.
What a day to be sighting the hares through the scope she bolted on The Wolfman pneumatic air rifle which cost £1,105 last winter in preparation for this moment in May and the scope was a BSA Optix 3 9x40 she purchased from Pellmax and as the moon from last night lingered yellow twinning celestial with the orange sun she saw the husk of hares and their leverets 150 yards away where she sighted them lolloping down the incline through the clayred grasses and the wild heather that twisted blond in the tumbling light and she minded how a hare can speed 55mph or more and she squeezed the T of T-R-I-G-G-E-R and went to tighten the R and sighed and desqueezed the T and exhaled more and placed the rifle at her side and nakedeye watched the husk come to a halt smooth and instant the hares and leverets for a moment paused in time on a hillside in the Cheshire wilds as if born only to this moment and no moment before and after and she now joining the creatures too among the wildness of the earth always out here waiting to be discovered anew.
And from her satchel she brought out the lunch she prepared for this juncture of midmorning and this consisted of three slices of butcher ham and two squares of Thee Ancient Cheshire East Cheese and two gherkins between two roughcut pieces of homebaked bread she homebaked at 7 this A.M. and she chased this with chilled water and after her repast fell back in the grass and away to a slumber.
Moments and moments ticked.
